Savannah Music Festival LIVE 522 – Cedar Walton

Original air date: week of September 17, 2012

When you’re raised by a mother who is an aspiring concert pianist as well as your piano teacher, and she takes you to hear performances by Nat King Cole, Erroll Garner, Mary Lou Williams, Earl Hines, Hank Jones and Lester Young, you’re not only a lucky guy, but you’re presented with a great opportunity. Such was the case of NEA Jazz Master Cedar Walton, who was born and grew up in Dallas, and used his mother’s guidance as a stepping stone to play with Kenny Dorham, JJ Johnson, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and many others before leading his own group. Tune in for a 2012 noontime recital given by Mr. Walton at the Savannah Music Festival.
