By the early 1880s, Johann Hummel’s father recognized that he had a child prodigy who had outstripped his own ability to teach him, so he jumped at the chance to move his family to Vienna where Mozart was then at his peak. When Mozart learned of this extraordinary young man, he invited him to his apartment, where Mozart was so impressed by the playing of the seven-year-old that he insisted that Johann come to live with the Mozart family and be given free lessons. In this episode, we listen to Hummel’s Piano Quintet in E-flat minor, Op. 87 performed at SMF 2017 by Benny Kim on violin, CarlaMaria Rodrigues on viola, Eric Kim on cello, Joseph Conyers on bass and Simon Crawford-Phillips at the piano.
