SUMMARY:Richard Thompson with Muireann Bradley
DESCRIPTION:“To be moving is better than to be standing still\,” Richard Thompson says\, and Richard Thompson should know. The influential singer-songwriter and virtuosic guitarist has been on a singular musical journey for over half a century\, from his days in the ‘60s as a pioneer of British folk rock with Fairport Convention\, to his seminal ‘70s duo work with Linda Thompson\, to the exploratory\, deeply emotional music of the solo career that has been his primary concern ever since. Along the way he has been touted as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone\, covered by everyone from Robert Plant\, R.E.M. and David Byrne to Sleater-Kinney\, Bonnie Raitt\, Del McCoury Band and Emmylou Harris\, bestowed with the Ivor Novello Award for songwriting\, and even appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by the late Queen Elizabeth II. This is his second SMF appearance\, following a 2017 festival performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening the show is the young Muireann Bradley from County Donegal in Ireland\, a prolific and nuanced fingerstyle guitarist and singer who grew up steeped in American acoustic blues music and just released her first heralded album\, I Kept These Old Blues. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis performance is sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Curtis Anderson and Joseph & Susan DockmanThis performance is sponsored in part by Tim & Dorothea Coy and Marysue McCarthy

SUMMARY:Awake\, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp\, Screening and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of 7 years\, Atlanta filmmakers/ Sacred Harp singers\, Matt & Erica Hinton\, created Awake\, My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp\, the first feature documentary to explore the history\, music\, and traditions of Sacred Harp singing\, the oldest distinctively American music. This haunting music has survived over 200 years tucked away from sight in the rural deep South\, where Sacred Harp singers begin each song by intoning syllables which are represented by each “shapenote” in their hymnal: fa\, sol\, la\, and mi (triangle\, oval\, square and diamond). To the casual observer\, it is some foreign\, unintelligible language\, but to these Sacred Harp singers\, it is the key that unlocks mysteries: songs of both beauty and sorrow\, of life and of death\, songs that cause feet to stomp and tears to flow\, often at the same time.  \n\n\n\nAwake\, My Soul aired nationwide on PBS in 2008 and was been featured in TIME\, Paste Magazine\, The New York Times\, Pitchfork\, SPIN and on NPR. \n\n\n\nAwake\, My Soul\, the 2025 Revision\, is the result of the long-term desire to make the film available again for a new generation. “The original film was released at precisely the best and worst time\,” according to co-director/ editor\, Matt Hinton. “It was the best time because there was still a strong monoculture: if a film aired on PBS\, lots of people saw it. It was also a period of physical media\, so we sold tons of DVDs. But on the other hand\, it was the worst time to have made a film– from the time we began production to the end of post-production\, the culture was moving from standard definition to high definition\, so within a year of its release\, very many people owned high definition TVs. Nothing makes a standard definition film look ‘standard’ like high definition. As a result\, the Hintons spent much of 2025 remastering and re-editing Awake\, My Soul. The 2025 Revision is now in hi-definition\, with a new sound mix and over 10 minutes of material not previously seen.” \n\n\n\nThis screening to be followed by a Q&A with filmmakers\, Matt & Erica Hinton. The Hintons are longtime Sacred Harp singers who have taught Sacred Harp singing schools around the country. Matt composed the song “Clayton” which was included in the 2025 Revision of the Sacred Harp songbook. He directed and edited the award-winning documentary “Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury.” \n\n\n\n“Awake\, My Soul features some of the most raucous group vocals that have been recorded.” -Pitchfork \n\n\n\n“Spectacular… Get enough people singing weird harmonies at the top of their voices and you start feeling a little sorry for the devil.” –Washington City Paper \n\n\n\n\nFor Entry\, please see the SMF Volunteer Ushers at the entrance to the Jepson Center. They will direct you to the Neises Auditorium. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis special 20th Anniversary screening of Awake\, My Soul launches two days of interactive activities presented in partnership with Savannah Sacred Harp Singers.  \n\n\n\nAdditional Sacred Harp activities: \n\n\n\nSinging School with Professor Esther Morgan-Ellis (University of North Georgia) \n\n\n\nTrinity United Methodist Church (Telfair Square) on Friday\, March 27\, 2:30 – 4:00 PM (immediately following film screening/Q&A) \n\n\n\n\nSacred Harp Singing \n\n\n\n\nChrist Church Anglican (2020 Bull Street) on Saturday\, March 28 10 AM – 3 PM \n\n\n\nLunch served at noon to all attendees. \n\n\n\n“A Southern Harmony Compline” \n\n\n\nChrist Church Anglican on Saturday\, March 28 at 9 PM \n\n\n\nThe Christ Church Compline Choir\, with help from traditional singers\, will offer this special 30 minute musical service in the sanctuary of Christ Church Anglican. The service is followed by coffee and dessert.

SUMMARY:Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country
DESCRIPTION:There are a lot of musical influences and sources that Daniel Donato has drawn on during his career and that inform Reflector\, the Nashville guitarist-singer-songwriter-bandleader’s first all-original album. But within those Donato has carved out a unique and individualized spot for himself\, one that speaks to the deep American music heritage that inspires him — and that he’s pushing towards the future with inspired\, intentional vigor. He calls it Cosmic Country\, a moniker that’s both self-descriptive and a statement of purpose. It’s an organic rock band aesthetic with plenty of roadhouse twang\, a showcase for Donato’s instrumental virtuosity and facility for songcraft. Bridging Nashville and the Great West\, Kentucky and mid-60s northern California\, tie-dye and plaid\, it’s a world of his own\, and a wide world of musical adventure at that. This is their SMF debut. This event is standing room only. \n\n\n\n\nThis performance is sponsored in part by Becky & Bill KeightleyPartial support provided by Jessica Carter & Family\, Savannah Magazine and Thomas & Hutton \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDaniel Donato is in search of that one true thing\n\n\n\nFor music lovers seeking a spacious community\, Nashville guitarist and singer- songwriter Daniel Donato opens the gates wide to his interpretation of cosmic country.By Amy Paige Condon \n\n\n\nCosmic Country\, in the inimitable parlance of wunderkind guitarist Daniel Donato\, is more akin to a unified field theory of music\, where soul rather than quantum physics connects the past\, present and future. His oeuvre is not a throwback to the Cosmic Cowboy-era of 1970s Austin\, Texas\, where bluesy honky-tonk swagger met hard rock thrust and progressive country vibes for a generation-defining sound—although Donato professes mad respect for its standard-bearers Willie Nelson\, Michael Martin Murphey and Jerry Jeff Walker\, and drinks from the same well\, musically speaking. \n\n\n\nDonato\, instead\, is in search of transcendence with every note.  \n\n\n\nCase in point: He shares a memory of playing “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo” with the Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester\, New York\, in 2023. Two bars before the chorus\, Lesh hit the E chord\, and “then I see a smile come up on his face. He’s taking this breath and a big old smile. He’s 84 years old and…I saw 50 years of joy that song would bring him. He was singing it to the people\, and the people were singing it back to him… \n\n\n\n“I remember leaving and thinking\, the only thing you have as a musician when you leave this planet are your songs and the recordings of the shows you played.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘My prayer is that we get one good moment a night on stage’  \n\n\n\nWhether he is writing his own tunes or picking a guitar\, Donato is trying to find that one true thing. Now nearly 31\, he has been playing professionally since the age of 14\, yet Donato still gets goosebumps as he rhapsodizes over lyrics written 50-plus years ago by Bob Dylan and even longer ago by Hank Williams:  \n\n\n\n“The silence of a falling star/Lights up a purple sky/And as I wonder where you are/I’m so lonesome\, I could cry.”  \n\n\n\nHe shakes his head. “If I could get one stanza like that\, I’ll leave this earth happier than I am.”  \n\n\n\nHe\, like Dylan\, has no idea where the songs come from\, but Donato believes it all — the music\, the lyrics and performances — is in service of something greater.  \n\n\n\n“On a physics level\, music is a unifying mechanism. That’s literally what it does — like gears within a watch that unify in sync to move the timepiece along. It also unifies light and darkness. You have major chords that are happy and sad chords that are minor or dark. They both exist within music\, fundamentally\, with an equal charge\, even if people weren’t there to hear it.”   \n\n\n\nBut the audience only amplifies the equation\, creating a reciprocity between player and listener that creates ultimate unity. “That’s why I think music is reflective of life itself. It literally is a coordination of time within space. It’s way more cosmic than I think anybody understands. Certainly\, it’s more than I do.”  \n\n\n\nTo those in Savannah for the music festival\, he offers an invitation to anyone who is looking for community through music. “We’re very much focused on being a high-frequency group of people. Everyone has open arms\, everyone loves each other\, everyone holds space for each other.” \n\n\n\nThat’s a message worth hearing. \n\n\n\nTickets $47 Mezzanine / $37 Floor (General Admission\, Standing Room Only)
