SUMMARY:Saha Gnawa
DESCRIPTION:Co-led by Maâlem Hassan Ben Jaafer and Daniel Freedman\, the critically-acclaimed ensemble Saha Gnawa unites the founders of Innov Gnawa with leading figures from New York City’s jazz and contemporary music scenes to reimagine modern Gnawa music. Often referred to as “Sufi Blues\,” Gnawa is rooted in Morocco’s ancient history. Over centuries\, infectious rhythms and polytheistic spiritual beliefs originating from West African slaves integrated with Islam and the indigenous culture of Morocco\, giving birth to a hybrid spiritual sect and musical community. The lyrics of Gnawa songs are prayers invoking saints and spirits for freedom and liberation. In a recent five-star album review\, Songlines noted: “Whereas previous Gnawa-jazz fusions have seemed to ruminate on concepts of ancientness\, this project instead revels in taking listeners on a voyage to the sound of a future New York\, a future Essaouira\, and a future of inspired imaginations from nowhere-in-particular.” \n\n\n\n\nThis performance is sponsored in part by Mr. & Mrs. John Tucker

SUMMARY:Richard Thompson with Muireann Bradley
DESCRIPTION:“To be moving is better than to be standing still\,” Richard Thompson says\, and Richard Thompson should know. The influential singer-songwriter and virtuosic guitarist has been on a singular musical journey for over half a century\, from his days in the ‘60s as a pioneer of British folk rock with Fairport Convention\, to his seminal ‘70s duo work with Linda Thompson\, to the exploratory\, deeply emotional music of the solo career that has been his primary concern ever since. Along the way he has been touted as one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone\, covered by everyone from Robert Plant\, R.E.M. and David Byrne to Sleater-Kinney\, Bonnie Raitt\, Del McCoury Band and Emmylou Harris\, bestowed with the Ivor Novello Award for songwriting\, and even appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by the late Queen Elizabeth II. This is his second SMF appearance\, following a 2017 festival performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpening the show is the young Muireann Bradley from County Donegal in Ireland\, a prolific and nuanced fingerstyle guitarist and singer who grew up steeped in American acoustic blues music and just released her first heralded album\, I Kept These Old Blues. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis performance is sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Curtis Anderson and Joseph & Susan DockmanThis performance is sponsored in part by Tim & Dorothea Coy and Marysue McCarthy

SUMMARY:Alfredo Rodriguez & Pedrito Martinez
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated artists Alfredo Rodriguez and Pedrito Martínez first worked together on Rodriguez’s 2012 release The Invasion Parade. Since that initial recording session\, they have had the rare occasion to perform together as a duo\, leaving audiences completely mesmerized by their fearless and virtuosic playing. Each artist brings a different approach to the collaboration. A protégé of Quincy Jones\, who took him under his wing when he defected to the US in 2009\, Rodriguez was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana. His riveting artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as it is by his Afro-Cuban and jazz roots. Martínez’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana in which he was raised\, and he has subsequently performed with artists such as Sting\, Paul Simon\, and Wynton Marsalis. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances in District Live are made possible through support from Plant Riverside District.Funding for the Faircloth jazz series is provided by Bob Faircloth. This performance is sponsored by Ron & Susan WhitakerPiano by Steinway & Sons

SUMMARY:Ladysmith Black Mambazo
DESCRIPTION:For 60 years\, South Africa’s five-time Grammy Award-winning ensemble Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies\, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. The group sings a traditional music style called isicathamiya (Is-Cot-A-Mee-Ya)\, which developed in the mines of South Africa. It was Paul Simon’s 1987 Graceland album that introduced Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the world. The late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world\,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honor. In 2018\, the group received not one\, but two Grammy Award nominations for two separate albums\, a first in the history of the World Music category. Ladysmith Black Mambazo has performed for millions of people\, singing a message of peace\, love and harmony. \n\n\n\n\n“It isn’t merely the grace and power of their dancing or the beauty of their singing that rivets the attention\, but the sheer joy and love that emanate from their being.” \n\n\n\n–Paul Simon \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances in the Trustees Theatre are made possible through support from SCAD.This performance is sponsored by Robin & Sandy StuartThis performance is sponsored in part by Tim & Dorothea CoyPartial support provided by Joyce Roché & Johnie Seals

SUMMARY:Noon30: Anda Union
DESCRIPTION:As with all nomads\, the Mongols have an oral culture\, passed on through generations in stories\, music and songs\, and thus Anda Union sings their history. The band’s thoroughly addictive combination of Mongolian musical styles is a reflection of their roots. Formed in 2000\, Anda Union has influenced a generation of young Mongolians in Inner Mongolia as traditional music flourishes in the capital. Hailing from differing ethnic nomadic cultures\, the ten members unite tribal and music traditions from all over Inner Mongolia. They do so by bringing a wide range of musical instruments and vocal styles together in a fusion that would have made Genghis Khan himself proud. If you missed their 2019 festival debut\, and especially if you did not\, the 2025 return of Anda Union is something you will want to behold!  \n\n\n\n\n“From a jaunty drinking song to eerie demonstrations of throat singing\, this versatile nine-piece summoned the lonely grandeur of their homeland beautifully.”  \n\n\n\n–The Guardian (UK) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances at North Garden Assembly Room are made possible through support from the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum.

SUMMARY:Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino
DESCRIPTION:Formed by writer Rina Durante in 1975\, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino (CGS) is regarded as Italy’s leading and longest-standing traditional music ensemble\, hailing from Salento in Puglia. Italy’s fascinating dichotomy of tradition and modernity comes together in the music of CGS. The seven-piece band and dancer are the leading exponents in a new wave of young performers reinventing Southern Italy’s pizzica music and dance traditions for today’s global audience. The tens of thousands who often congregate for this Lecce-based band’s concerts in Italy know that bandleader\, fiddler and drummer Mauro Durante and company can make an audience shimmy with the energy of the ancient ritual of pizzica tarantata\, said to cure the tarantula spider’s bite with its frenzied trance-like dances. CGS shows are full of energy\, passion\, rhythm and mystery\, bringing the audience from the past into modernity\, and back. This is their first time at Savannah Music Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPerformances in the Metal Building are made possible through support from Charles & Rosalie MorrisThis performance is sponsored by Visit Savannah and Rhegan White-Clemm & Timothy ClemmThis performance is sponsored in part by Sound View Wealth Advisors\, LLC | Kelly Bouchillon\, Emerson Ham\, Melissa Bouchillon\, Eddie AmbrosePartial support is provided by Jacqueline & Ken Sirlin
