In this palindromic program we are treated to arguably two of the greatest Piano Quintets ever composed. Much has been written and discussed concerning the fascinating relationship between Brahms and Schumann (and indeed Clara Schumann’s involvement) and whilst that aspect adds an interesting twist to proceedings, ultimately the music of these two great masters is the standalone winner. Both Quintets were written at the absolute pinnacle of their compositional output, and are beautifully complimented in this program by the magical Three Intermezzi by Brahms, and the sumptuous and fiery Adagio and Allegro by Schumann.
