Gillian Welch

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Gillian Welch performed at SMF in 2016 as part of the Dave Rawlings Machine. In this return, Welch shares the stage with her musical partner David Rawlings in their classic duo format, performing music that has made them leaders of the Americana music scene since the late 90s. It is not an exaggeration to say that Gillian Welch’s debut album Revival, produced by T Bone Burnett, simultaneously launched her career and an entire musical movement. Now 25-years later, Gillian Welch is described by The New Yorker as “at once innovative and obliquely reminiscent of past rural forms.”

The son of Louisiana Hall of Fame guitarist Ted Broussard, Marc Broussard’s music is distinguished by a blend of R&B, rock and pop, and his voice bears witness to the influences of Motown, gospel and the blues. The Washington Times writes that “few modern voices are as powerful as Marc Broussard’s soulful Bayou-bred baritone.”

Brent Cobb

Ellaville, Georgia native Brent Cobb has penned songs for Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert and Kenny Chesney, though his own style is a far cry from contemporary country music. Nashville Scene describes his singing as “soft and sweet, with surefooted hints of soul,” and his original music is influenced by blue-eyed soul, country funk and the swamp boogie sounds that were predominant in popular music in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Mipso

Chapel Hill’s indie Americana quartet Mipso is influenced by the juxtaposition of their progressive home and the surrounding rural southern landscape. Venturing beyond their origins as a stringband, the band’s music is evolving into an area where classic folk-rock and modern alt-country sounds mingle easily with Appalachian tradition. Acoustic Guitar  characterizes Mipso as “hewing surprisingly close to gospel and folk while still sounding modern and secular.”
