Alfred Hitchcock's original version of "Blackmail" (1929) is important for its place in cinema history. This compact, little thriller holds up well nearly eighty years after its initial screening. The film began as a silent movie, but by 1929 cinema audiences were eager to see talking films, so the producers decided
to insert a few lines of dialogue into the last reel, which did not completely satisfy Hitchcock, who secretly shot additional scenes for the film in sound. A story of an innocent couple that gets wrapped up in the blackmail scheme of a petty thief, the film confirmed the then thirty-year-old Hitchcock as one of the most important and talented British filmmakers of the day.
