The One and Only Wycliffe Gordon: Swing Central Finale
Series sponsored by ROBERT AND JEAN FAIRCLOTH. Sponsored in part by ATLANTA GAS LIGHT and CITITRENDS
April 5, 2008 7:00 PMSeries: Jazz Now and Forever
One of the greatest jazz musicians to ever emerge from Georgia, Wycliffe Gordon is a favorite of SMF audiences during his annual appearances here. The Waynesboro native is one of the leading trombonists, composers and educators in jazz today, and this evening's program enlists all of those talents. The concert
showcases his original compositions and arrangements, as well as features the premiere of a new work ommissioned by SMF. Mr. Gordon is joined by a host of his favorite musicians in a variety of settings. The evening begins with the winners of the SMF Swing Central High School Jazz Band Competition and features three bands performing one work each, including a selection by Mr. Gordon, who also serves as an educator in this initiative.
"In an art form too often rife with factionalism and stylistic myopia, Wycliffe Gordon is a breath of fresh air."
