Hawktail is a collection of four of the most exciting young artists in acoustic music: Brittany Haas on fiddle, Dominick Leslie on mandolin, Jordan Tice on guitar and Paul Kowert on bass. The group is an extension of the trio Haas Kowert Tice, who first performed at SMF 2016, and whose three members participated in the inaugural Acoustic Music Seminar in 2012. The members of Hawktail are involved in a variety of notable outfits including Dave Rawlings Machine, Punch Brothers, Crooked Still and A Prairie Home Companion, among others. Together, they have created a unique instrumental group, offering music that sparks the imagination and emboldens the spirit.
Andrew and Brad Barr began their musical careers in Boston playing with the improvisational rock trio, The Slip. In 2005, the brothers relocated to Montreal and became neighbors with harpist Sarah Pagé, with whom they founded The Barr Brothers. In the years since, The Barr Brothers have played to sold-out crowds throughout North America and Europe. They have shared stages with artists including Calexico, The War On Drugs, Patrick Watson, and Shakey Graves, and gave a debut performance at SMF in 2015 on a co-bill with The Apache Relay. The Barr Brothers’ most recent album, Queens of the Breakers, has received extensive accolades, including being dubbed “their most richly-coloured record to date” by Q Magazine. For their return to SMF, Brad (guitar and vocals) and Andrew (drums) are joined by Brett Lanier on pedal steel, Lisa Moore on keyboards and Morgan Moore on bass.
