Acoustic Music Seminar
The Savannah Music Festival (SMF) will launch a new acoustic music intensive for promising young players called the Acoustic Music Seminar (AMS). During the final week of the Festival in the spring of 2012 (April 2-7), we will host a small group (15-20) of young musicians in Savannah. They will work with a team of clinicians that will include Mike Marshall (Associate Director), Chris Thile, Edgar Meyer, Tony Trischka, Zakir Hussain, Daniel Hope, Julian Lage and Bruce Molsky.
The goal of the AMS is to foster the cognitive, creative and artistic growth of a handpicked group of gifted young musicians by providing intimate instruction that covers ensemble and rhythm playing, composition, improvisation, and the history of acoustic music in America. Each student will bring a composition to the AMS, which will be worked on and developed by their instructors and peers. The workshop will culminate in an original production at the 2012 SMF, featuring the results of this collaborative instruction.
Students will benefit from advanced instruction rooted in the ever-evolving tradition of American String Band music. Primary instruments can include (but aren't limited to) guitar, mandolin, fiddle/violin, dobro, bass, cello and banjo.
