Champaign Central High School Jazz Ensemble

The jazz program at Champaign Central High School is comprised of three jazz bands and two combos. In addition to community performances, all of the jazz groups participate in festivals and competitions throughout the school year. Each year the band program hosts two major jazz events, the Central Swing Dance and the two day Central Jazz Festival. John Currey has been the Director of the Jazz Ensemble since 1998, and in that time has the bands have received numerous awards, including performing at the 2002 and 2007 and 2016 Midwest Clinic, the Monterrey Jazz Festival, the North Texas Jazz Festival, best of the day awards at Louisville, Berklee, Purdue, Eau Claire, and Mundelein Jazz Festivals, and was a finalist for the Essentially Ellington Festival held in New York City in 2005, 2007 and 2012. This is the third appearance for the Jazz Ensemble at Swing Central Jazz , 2011, 2012 and 2017. The Jazz Ensemble has also performed at the Illinois All-State Conference in 2007, and 2016.
