Series: Savannah Jazz Party

The patriarch of New Orleans' first family of jazz, Ellis Marsalis, is regarded by many as the city's premier modern jazz pianist. He is an eloquent performer who has long been involved in jazz as an educator and scholar. Since
retiring from his position as the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of New Orleans in 2001, Mr. Marsalis has recorded and performed exclusively with his quartet featuring drummer (and his son) Jason Marsalis, saxophonist Derek Doughet and bassist Jason Stewart. His SMF debut is a rare chance for Savannah audiences to witness
the incredible musical chemistry of the Marsalis family firsthand.

"Long before Ellis Marsalis became the founding father of the mighty Marsalis dynasty or was exalted as a supreme educator/guru, he was a splendid, hard-swinging, modern jazz pianist..." -Hartford Courant

Venue: Charles H. Morris Center
