Maestros in Concert: Zakir Hussain & Shivkumar Sharma with special guest, Daniel Hope
Series sponsored by Coca-Cola and Glaceau.
Additional support provided by Georgia Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.
This program showcases the Hindustani classical music tradition featuring the world's greatest tabla player, Zakir Hussain, with the master of the santoor (a type of hammered dulcimer), Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. These two virtuosos, considered national treasures in India, play gorgeous and explosive music. Zakir Hussain is a recipient of the 1999 National Heritage Fellowship, the United States' most prestigious honor for a master in the traditional arts. The concert includes a special guest appearance by SMF Associate Artistic Director Daniel Hope.
"An international phenomenon, Hussain is the favorite accompanist for India's greatest classical musicians and dancers. His contributions to world music and historic collaborations with artists as diverse as George Harrison, John McLaughlin, Van Morrison and Mickey Hart have made him the one and only."
